"El Dorado" is the Spanish name of an ancient Colombian Amerindian chief who would cover his naked body in gold dust, venture out into the middle of Lake Guatavita upon a ceremonial raft, and dive into the waters washing off the gold from his flesh as a tribute to the gods. This simple act of devotion was misinterpreted by European conquerors of the Americas who mistakenly believed there was a "Lost City of Gold" hidden somewhere in the jungles of Colombia. Hundreds of greedy men have lost their live over the past 500 years searching for these golden treasures.

Perhaps, though, the legend of "El Dorado" is not really about finding the "lost" gold in the lake, but rather about finding the little pieces of gold within oneself.

If this be the case, one could see how the country of Colombia has truly given its "gold" to the world: author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, painter Fernando Botero, singer Shakira, comedian John Lequizamo and actress Sofia Vergara are all Colombian. Even Juan Valdez, the famous coffee spokesperson, speaks of the riches of Colombia. Maybe one day, the model in this series, Carlos, can be included on this list of artists.

In this special tribute to "El Dorado" shot by Ricardo Muniz, Carlos strips down the legend to its very essence and core as he splashes about in the waters of the Catskill Mountains. "I'm very proud of my Colombian heritage," Carlos proclaims. "I've been doing modeling on the side for two years now and I hope to branch out into more commercial gigs including acting and fitness as well as modeling."

As a 21-year-old college student living in New Jersey studying criminal justice, Carlos states, "I really want to see doors open for more Latinos."

INDIAN SUMMER

"Indian summer" is an old, US American colonial term for an actual meteorological phenomenon that occurs during autumn. Indian summer refers to a period of dry, hot, summer-like days that suddenly appear after the cold weather of fall has begun. It can occur anytime between mid-September and early November. Ironically, this year, Indian summer fell on Columbus Day weekend in New York City when temperatures reached into the 80s breaking records. Many flocked to the beaches or crowded parks while others went to the Columbus Day Parade on Fifth Avenue.

I thought I'd make a political statement by paying tribute, instead, to the original inhabitants of the Americas: people of Native American, Amerindian and Pacific Islander descent.

Yes, the shots are of a bunch of pretty boys romping in swimwear, but there is a strong undercurrent of political commentary.

The original concept behind the shoot, though, was to "inspire" readers of BeautifulMag to purchase aussieBum, Addicted and ES Collection wares from LA Jock. Nir Zilberman, of LA Jock, agreed to donate proceeds from the sales to charity, specifically, Team to End AIDS (www.t2ea.com). Thus, with Rob's assistance from BeautifulMag, the "Charity Shoot" was born.

My work as an artist and educator has been to highlight the beauty in our differences (Latinos and communities of color in the US) in order to show that the little things that are beautiful to us are really not that much different than what others claim is beautiful to them. Beauty is beauty. The perspective may be different, but the perception is pretty much the same. My perspective happens to have a lot of color and spice--that's all. And, some heat. Puerto Rico is a hot island, you know, in the Caribbean.

My goal is to find the something in the "nothing" by which the US views us and tries to define us. I think beauty can be found anywhere, so I try to find the cracks and crevices where the light rarely or barely shines and I try to show the beauty that exists there. This is why my work features mainly people of color in compositions of color. I want to shine a light on who we are. In essence, it's my philosophy towards life that my art exemplifies: your world may not be beautiful, but you sure can be.

Thankfully, some people actually like my work.

My body art photography is featured in the current issue of Dylan Rosser's TMF Magazine with an accompanying story by Tye Briggs. Thank you, Lord.

PAPIS de la playa

The original idea behind this editorial dates back to early 2009 when I was going to do a spread highlighting the diverse beauty of my Latino people. We are truly representative of the world's cultures: we come in all shapes, sizes, and colors and the traits and features of the world's races can be seen to varying degrees in the majority of us. Beauty has many different faces.

The shots from that feature, though, were ensnared in limbo due to a battle between the original magazine publisher and the distributor.

Finally, after an extended period of time, I was able to return to that idea, include some of the original shots, and create a new feature highlighting the diversity and the beauty of two men of Dominican Republic heritage. This is the feature you see here, "PAPIS de la playa", shot on beaches throughout NYC and the Caribbean including the Bronx's own Puerto Rican Riviera, Chocha Beach.

Special thanks go out to the models, Deilin and Will, who waited years for copies of their old shots and to the HUF team who worked so thoughtfully and patiently with me to include my work in HUF Magazine No. 8, The Summer Issue. I'd also like to wish Vince much success in his new position.

LIVING in COLOR

June is Pride Month. In Harlem's own Casa Frela Gallery (www.casafrela.com) 47 West 119th between Lenox and Fifth, it is the time to celebrate both Harlem Pride and the pride of LGBT artists of color throughout New York with a special exhibition and performance piece, LIVING in COLOR.

Conceived as a collaborative art and dance installation, photographer/body artist, Ricardo Muñiz, and dancer/writer, Clarence Haynes, looked to the power of color for this joint venture. LIVING in COLOR features an exhibition of photography, acrylic paintings, ink drawings, mixed-media collages and even a toy theater. The exhibit opens June 11 from 6 to 9 pm and will run daily from noon to 4 pm through June 30, 2011. On June 18th, from 5 pm to 10 pm, the exhibit itself will be a stage for a series of short performances and dances bringing the colors of Harlem to life.

LIVING in COLOR is a celebration of living art in the LGBT community of color. It is a celebration of both the colors of life and the lives of people of color.

The LIVING in COLOR exhibit will showcase the art and photography of Ricardo Muñiz and will include exhibition pieces from LLanor Alleyne, Steven E Brown and Marivel Mejia. The LIVING in COLOR performance installation on June 18th will feature the interpretive work of The Beautiful Ones, a multicultural collective of models, dancers, and performance artists who play with identity, pan-sexuality and fantasy under the direction of Clarence Haynes.

The exhibit is free. Information on ticket purchasing for the performances is available on the Casa Frela Gallery website.

A portion of the proceeds from the performances and from the sale of the exhibited art will be donated to charities that support educational opportunities for communities of color and/or provide therapeutic support for LGBT youth of color.

Carlos is a Colombian immigrant from some backwoods project in Jersey somewhere. I had a pic of his crossing the border, but I didn't want to get his tía in trouble with border patrol, so I didn't include it in this editorial. "Baby Dolls and Corsets"

This editorial is dedicated to the late Francisco A Rosario (www.farcouture.com) who succumbed to leukemia at the tender age of 36 on October 18, 2009, one month after his last NY Fashion Week show.

Franky exploded onto the NY fashion scene in 2005 after years of work as a dancer, model and choreographer. Franky transformed his love of baby dolls and corsets into flirty, romantic designs that were quickly snapped up by many in the entertainment and Latin music industry with whom he worked. Franky's client list included Farrah Fawcett, Janet Jackson, Russel Simmons, and Latin stars including Zelma Davis from C & C Music Factory, Brenda K Starr, Corina, Safire, and Coro.

Unfortunately, soon after Franky created FAR Couture, he was diagnosed with leukemia. Limited in 2007 and 2008 by his medical battles, Franky made one last heroic return to the runway this past September for his last NY Fashion Week. Bello ran those shots in its September 2009 issue.

This editorial says goodbye the way Franky would have liked. And, Chloe, Franky's beloved Pomeranian, now cared for by Zelma Davis of C & C Music Factory, was there as part of the shoot just like she was during all of his runway shows.

Here, finally, are the Calientitos shots from my 2009-2010 fundraising calendar which raised proceeds for the American Indian College Fund. Although the calendar is no longer on sale (yes, there are a few copies left if interested), you can go directly to the AICF website and donate yourself (http://www.collegefund.org/). Just so you know, 100% of all net proceeds were donated to charity.

Hey, guys. Apologies about the delay, but I've been busy trying to catch up on bills, so I've had little time for photography. I do have some new work coming, but, since it's been some time since I posted, I thought I'd go back and post some of my earlier work.

The following are commercial shots I did for my friends at Boiish who, unfortunately, have gone out of business. Santos is a great guy and the models loved working for Boiish because they really treated the guys right and hooked them up with tons of clothing. It's too bad the economy led to the company's demise--I was proud to say I worked with Boiish.

I’m actually really happy with this series—not just because Nicholas is such a great guy, but also because I finally get to photograph a “compadre,” a “Boricua-de-verdad” like me (coño!).

While accompanying a model to a runway show featuring the designs of 21-year-old Dominican designer, Rafael De Pena, I met Joe Kavitski from Pennsylvania. What impressed me most about Joe was not his physique, but his work ethic. Joe is part of the creative force behind the independent film company, Aligned Creative (http://aligned-creative.com/).

After an initial body art session for an exhibit of mine in Mexico, Joe has become one of my key male models--appearing and participating in everything from runway fashion shows to late-night club performances to fashion and commercial editorials to the following series which was published as part of an ongoing feature of mine for Next Model Men (http://nextmodelmen.typepad.com/hottestmodel/2009/05/joe-kavitski-is-the-next-hottest-model.html) highlighting New York's top male model prospects.

Joe says, "You need to be comfortable with who you are. Know what you are willing to stand for and how far you are willing to go to realize your dreams...sometimes people will try to compromise your art. It is at those definitive moments where decisions must be made. By understanding your own belief system and having clearly defined goals, you can make educated choices that you are proud of."

Puerto Rican Pride

There is a tiny island in the Caribbean Sea that is so densely populated that it actually has the highest number of people per square foot in the whole western hemisphere. Four million call this island paradise home. Over the years, another 2.5 million have made their homes in the continental United States. This island paradise is named Puerto Rico. New York City, with its own population of over one million Puerto Ricans, is the unofficial capital of Puerto Rican culture--twice as many Puerto Ricans live in NYC than in the island's capital of San Juan.

Puerto Rico, also known as Borinken, its Taíno Indian name, prides itself on its history of immigration and multiculturalism. Puerto Ricans, or Boricuas as we often call ourselves, are a mix of Amerindian, African and European cultures and peoples. Many international music, sports, literature and film stars are of Puerto Rican heritage including Jennifer López, Marc Anthony, Miguel Cotto, Ricky Martín, Rita Moreno, Felix Trinidad, Roberto Clemente, Christy Turlington, Don Pedro Albizú Campos, Tito Puente, Benecio del Toro, Jimmy Smits, Iris Chacón, Charytín, Don Omar, Daddy Yankee, Chita Rivera, José Feliciano, Rosario Ferré and Júlia de Burgos.

A version of this first premiered as the body art editorial, "Coloring Santiago," on Beautiful Magazine. If you pay close attention, you'll notice the Vizeau swimwear on Santiago disappear.

Tributo a la gran migracion

The late 1940s and early 1950s was the time of "La gran migracion," a decade in which hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans and Cubans migrated to the US and redefined US American Culture.

DTM (Dominican Times Magazine) ran my editorial tribute to our first-generation, ground-breaking forefathers who brought the Latin flavor to everything from music to movies to fashion to art to food to culture. The following editorial included an all-color cast reflecting people of Puerto Rican, Dominican, Panamanian, African American and West Indian heritage.

Culture and Couture vs Poverty and Pimps

Every year, thousands of young women and men flock to Hollywood and New York City in search of fame. The harsh reality is that a number of them will gain only notoriety on Hollywood and Santa Monica Boulevards and the cold streets of Hunts Point at night.

This editorial is shot on location in the notorious Hunts Point section of the Bronx made “famous” by a series of HBO documentaries detailing the neighborhood’s penchant for prostitution, pimps, drugs and graffiti-stained warehouses. Medical studies have recently concluded that the high number of incinerators and car chop shops has made living in Hunts Point hazardous for its children—Hunts Point has the highest children’s asthma rates in the US and one of the higher school dropout rates.

However, Hunts Point is slowly changing. From the ashes of poverty, Hunts Point has become a mecca for many of the Bronx’s more progressive and politically-active, minority artists. Now, Hunts Point is undergoing a transformation as several art, dance and cultural centers have taken root including The Point, a youth-oriented arts and community center, BAAD, the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, and Tats Cru Inc., the internationally-recognized graffiti artists. A new waterfront park and bike path have provided its children respite from its nighttime notoriety.

The idea behind this editorial is to display the dichotomy that exists in Hunts Point. To do this, I shot these models, designers and contributing artists of color (Puerto Rican, Dominican, Ecuadorian, Sudanese and African American) of this editorial on the simple streets of Hunts Point and inside the famed Banknote Building where the US Treasury once printed foreign currency for other countries and which now houses several small community businesses and cultural centers.

The irony is that these same community people who helped transform the neighborhood after years of struggle are now being evicted as elite Manhattan artists and businesses buy out their property and leases.

I hope the point of my editorial is clear: there is beauty in poverty.

Undah da Bridge

Here's my satirical and sexy fashion commentary on the real New York. Former NYC mayor, Rudy Giuliani, spent countless hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars to eradicate the sex industry from Times Square. Even buildings were moved along tracks to make way for the Disney-fication of midtown Manhattan.

However, despite its push out of Times Square, NYC prostitution did not disappear. Instead, it has been forced to operate in Uptown Manhattan, in the Bronx and in Queens often near or under many of New York's bridges and highway systems.

During Guiliani's last years in office, the NYPD "swept" prostitution out of Times Square--much to the delight of tourists and to the dismay of the Port Authority crowd. Ironically, news stories broke about how some NYPD officers were partaking in the sex industry either by taking payoffs or by getting free sexual services in order to let the escort services thrive.

Here's my tribute to those pimps and hos.

Rencor y amor (La transformacion)

The main idea behind the creation of Coquíchulo Images was one of artistic support of my own Latino community. I was a social worker and teacher working with young people with severe problems (emotional, academic, social, and psychological) for over 15 years. Before I decided to pursue my artistic endeavors—photography, puppetry, and body art—I devoted myself and my work to help foster creativity and success within communities of color.

Although I’m a full-time artist, I have never left my community behind. I’m still a teacher and social worker at heart. Many of my exhibits, editorials, performances, shows and events include former students and community members either as models, participants, workers or contributors. I give much credence to the saying, “Each one, teach one.”

Unfortunately, it is exceedingly difficult for Latino models or other models of color to make it in the industry, but I’m hoping with continued support, we can change this. I let young people know that they have to work ten times as hard just to get to the door. With the numbers of Latinos on the rise here in the US and the industry finally recognizing our buying power, hopefully, we can start portraying more varied roles and, finally, earning something commensurate with our efforts.

I love my work. I still work with young people in many capacities, but I’m able now to help young Latinos realize their artistic visions. Recently, my art photography has drawn me more into fashion and I’ve begun mentoring aspiring Latino models and reaching out to designers, stylists, makeup artists and other artists of color in hopes of getting our voices heard and our visions realized.

The following fashion editorial was published in part and in different versions on Ohlala, Beautiful and Ethan Says. I chose as a theme how fashion can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. To accomplish this, I reached out to rising Colombian designer and NY Fashion Week staple, Edwing D’Angelo (http://www.edwingdangelo.com/). Edwing’s attention to detail and love of fine fabrics and clean lines and bold-but-subdued colors is perfectly exemplified on Israeli model, Zion Cohen, American softball player, Chris, and Native American/white/black personal trainer, Kent Edwards.

I’m known as an art photographer who uses whatever resources are available and on-hand at the location: no special lighting, filters, studios, gimmicks or Photoshop tricks. I want the viewer to see exactly what we, the participants, see—simple beauty.

I hope this editorial, “Rencor y amor,” properly lends credence to the magic that is Edwing D’Angelo’s Love Eclipse line for men.

Although recruited by Major Models, Miguel has decided to quit modeling. I still call him with offers from time to time, but he and many models of color like him have become disillusioned by their treatment in the industry.

Chocha Beach

The Bronx's infamous Orchard Beach has been affectionately known as "Chocha" Beach by its Puerto Rican fans since the 50s. If you know Caribbean Spanish slang, you can guess how this name came to be.

Last summer with the help of Alberto Fermin and Fernando Romero of Escandalo Nights (www.myspace.com/escandalonight or www.myspace.com/escandalonights), Martin Alatorre of Adelante Magazine, the guys from swimwear company, Wettackle (www.wettackleaustralia.com), Jannice Cameron of Papi Underwear (www.papiinc.com), Debbi Medina of El Morocco Nightclub (www.elmorocconyc.com) and Coquichulo Images (www.myspace.com/coquichuloimages), we sponsored the first-ever, Mr. Escandalo Male Modeling Contest.

Escandalo Nights is NY's largest, monthly, themed party. It's mission is to create a welcoming and safe atmosphere where gays, lesbians, straights, transgendered, the curious and the confused can come together and party hard.

To celebrate its four years of existence, Escandalo Nights created the Mr. Escandalo Contest hoping to crown the man who represents all that is Escandalo Nights--diversity, respect, and acceptance.

Deilin, the Dominican physique model pictured on the cover of Adelante Magazine, was crowned the first winner and earned $1000 plus prizes. Erik, the blond personal trainer below, was the runner-up and was awarded $500.
